# Guitar strap fit guide

> How a slot-adjusted guitar strap is set to length, standing or seated, what to check when it arrives, and which measurements we are still waiting on.

There is no size to choose on this strap. The tail is cut with a row of slots, the shoulder end feeds through them, and the length is whatever slot you leave it on. This page is about setting it and about what to check when it arrives.

## How a slot-adjusted strap works

One end of the strap is a solid leather tab with a hole in it, which goes on a strap button. The other end is a tail with a row of slots cut down it. The tail passes through the shoulder end and one of the slots takes the second strap button, the way a belt buckle takes one hole out of many. Moving the guitar up or down is a matter of moving the tail to a different slot, which takes a few seconds and no tools.

## Setting it

1. Put the strap on both buttons with the tail already through the shoulder end.
2. Stand the way you actually play, not the way that looks right in a mirror.
3. If the guitar sits too high or too low, take it off, move the tail one slot, and try again. Two or three goes settles it.

## Sitting and standing

Set the strap standing up. Seated, the guitar rests on your leg and the strap goes slack; slack is harmless. A strap set while seated will hang the guitar too low the moment you stand, which is the mistake worth avoiding.

## What we can tell you

It is a wide strap, wider than the nylon strap most guitars leave the shop with. It has no padding, so the width is what spreads the weight. The back is a suede finish, which is what stops it sliding forward on a shirt. The photographs on the [strap page](https://setliststraps.com/wide-leather-guitar-strap/) show it across a guitar neck and worn over a shoulder.

## Two measurements we will not guess at

We do not have the width of the strap in inches or centimeters from the maker, and we do not have the shortest and longest length the slots reach. We asked Soldier for both on 14 September 2026. Until they answer there is no figure for either anywhere on this site, because a guessed measurement is a measurement that turns into a return. This page changes the day we have them.

**What we sell:** one strap, the Soldier double-layer cowhide strap, in black, dark brown, tan or white. Suede-finish back, length set through a row of slots on the tail. £54.95 with free UK delivery.

## Two buttons, not one

Both ends of this strap are button holes, so the instrument needs two strap buttons. Most electrics and basses have them. Many acoustics have only a tail button, and those need a headstock tie or a neck button fitted by a repair shop; the guide on [attaching a strap to an acoustic](https://setliststraps.com/guides/how-to-attach-a-strap-to-an-acoustic-guitar/) compares the options. We do not sell either part.

## If it is not right
