The best guitar strap for a Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster is whichever one is comfortable at the length you play, because both guitars balance on their two buttons and neither needs a strap that fights neck dive. A Strat or a Tele hangs level and weighs little, so the strap is only holding a light body against your ribs while you stand up. That puts the decision on length, edge comfort, what the back does on a shirt, and color.
Why a Strat or a Tele does not dive
Neck dive is a balance problem. The headstock drops when the weight on the neck side of the two strap buttons beats the weight on the body side. On a Stratocaster the neck-end button is set into the top edge of the upper horn, well forward of the neck joint, and that leaves enough body behind the pivot to hold the neck up. A Telecaster carries its neck-end button on the body edge near the neck heel instead of out on a horn, so it balances a little less generously, and with a solid slab body against six tuners in a line it still stays where you put it. Most Stratocasters and Telecasters weigh between 7 and 9 lb (3.2 to 4.1 kg) depending on the body wood and the piece of timber you happened to get, which is light enough that shoulder load is not the problem either. What to buy for instead
On a guitar this light, four things change how a strap feels over a couple of hours.
- Length. Measure button to button over your shoulder with the guitar where you want it. Most players land between 45 and 55 inches (114 to 140 cm). The length guide has the two minute method and the size guide has it in table form.
- Edge comfort. A raw nylon edge saws at your neck through a thin shirt. A leather edge that has been cut and stitched rounds off after a few weeks and you stop feeling it.
- The back. Suede or rough-out leather holds its place on cotton. Smooth nylon and glossy finished leather creep toward your neck while you play. On a balanced guitar that is a comfort matter rather than a dive matter, and it is still what you notice by the end of a set.
- Width. Width spreads the weight across your shoulder. At 7 to 9 lb a 2 inch (5 cm) strap carries a Strat fine, and going wider is about a three hour set rather than about rescue.
Strap height and the neck-end button
Height is the setting that changes your playing, and it costs nothing to change. Worn high, at the belt, your fretting wrist is straighter at the nut, barre chords down at the first fret cost less effort, and your picking forearm lies on the body and holds the guitar still. Worn low, at the hip or under it, the reach to first position gets longer and the wrist bends more. Set it standing, plugged in, playing something you really play rather than a chord you are checking. A strap with a row of slots on the tail moves in seconds, which matters here, because most people end up a slot or two from where they first guessed. An offset like a Jazzmaster has a longer run between the two buttons, so the same slot hangs it lower on you, and you set the height on that guitar rather than copying the slot from your Strat.
Telecaster specifics: the body edge and the bridge plate
A traditional Telecaster body is a slab with square edges. Fender gave the Stratocaster a forearm contour and a belly cut when it arrived in 1954, and the classic Tele shape got neither, so on a vintage style Tele the top edge meets your forearm with nothing rounded off. Some current models, the American Ultra Telecaster among them, do carry both contours, so check your own guitar before you read this part. Strap height decides where that edge lands on you. An inch or two higher moves the contact from the middle of your forearm toward the elbow, which most players find easier over a long set. The vintage style bridge plate has raised sides, and your picking palm rests against one of them, so the same change in height moves your palm on the plate and shifts where your muted notes sit. Set the height on the Tele rather than copying the slot you use on another guitar.
Color: butterscotch, sunburst, black and white
Color changes nothing about how the strap carries the guitar, so this part is only about what you want to look at every night. Black disappears against anything. Dark brown reads vintage on a burst or a natural finish. Tan is the one that gets seen. White matches a white guitar and shows every mark.

Leather darkens where hands touch it, and the light colors move most, so a tan strap on a butterscotch Tele will not be the color it started as a year from now. Some players buy tan for exactly that.

Do Telecasters have neck dive?
Not as a rule. The neck-end button sits near the neck heel rather than out on a horn, which is less forward than the Stratocaster placement, and the slab body still outweighs the neck. If a Tele tips its head, the strap is sliding on your shirt, and a suede back stops that.
What color strap goes with a sunburst Strat?
Dark brown. It picks up the amber ring in a three-color burst and it does not fight the red. Tan is the second choice and it is louder against the finish. Black works on any guitar and says nothing at all.
Are Fender strap buttons standard?
Fender publishes no button standard, and it has not fitted one button everywhere. Most Fender electrics carry a plain round-head button that the common aftermarket lock kits are built around, but some models, the Strat Plus and American Deluxe families among them, left the factory with Schaller locking buttons already fitted, so check the guitar before you buy a kit.
